21 July 2010 Moving drug and alcohol forward with health reform The Network of Alcohol and Other Drugs Agencies (NADA) is concerned about the gap that currently exists in the National Health and Hospitals Network agreement in relation to the funding, governance and policy responsibility of the drug and alcohol service system. NADA eblieves there is an opportunity for real reform in this area, to expand the delivery of community based drug and alcohol treatment and health promotion services within the context of primary health care, and to ease the demand and escalating cost of acute care provided in Australia’s hospitals. NADA calls on the NSW and Federal government to work with the non government sector on opportunities for new and expanded models of service delivery with a greater focus on community based care and innovation. ******************************************************************** National Health Reform – Considering the health of all Australians? NADA believes that reform to Australia’s health system is necessary but urges the Federal Government to consider the health of all Australians in the reform process including consumers who access health services beyond hospitals and General Practitioners (GP) and consumers with complex health issues such as drug and alcohol and mental health problems. NADA CEO, Larry Pierce says, “The services provided by specialist drug and alcohol non government organisations address a range of complex health needs as well as drug dependency. The severity of these clients’ needs cannot be dealt with simply in the context of general practice.” Click here to read the full media release.
