Engaging men who perpetrate domestic and family violence in the alcohol and other drugs (AOD) treatment context: A NADA Practice Resource

21 June 2021
1:30pm – 2:30pm
Online Webinar, At your computer,
This webinar will explore NADA’s practice resource, that aims to support the AOD workforce with practical skills and knowledge to work with men who are perpetrating domestic and family violence (DFV). Though DFV is a highly specialised area, and not core business for AOD services, it is important that the workforce build capacity to better respond to people who use DFV and work alongside other service sectors, to address this very serious problem.

DFV comes in many forms and can be used and experienced by someone of any gender identity. However, research has shown that men are by far the most common perpetrators of DFV, and cause the most harm. This resource therefore focuses on engaging adult male clients who perpetrate DFV.

The webinar will feature:
Rodney Vlais, who will explore the different sections of the resource and how it can be used. Rodney worked with NADA and led the development of the resource. Rodney is a policy consultant, trainer, researcher, and supervisor in the area of gender-based violence, including men’s use of domestic and family violence.

Suzie Hudson (Clinical Director, NADA) and Michelle Ridley (Clinical Program Manager, NADA) will discuss the background to the development of the resource and lead a panel discussion with NADA members who were part of the consultation workshop that informed the content of the resource, Paul Hardy (Manager, AOD Program, Community Restorative Centre) and Andrew McCrudden (Team Leader, Continuing Coordinated Care, SVDP).

Paul Hardy has worked at Community Restorative Centre since 2012, establishing the AOD Program and leading its expansion. He has over 20 years’ experience in the AOD and homelessness sectors both in the UK and Australia, focusing on supporting the most marginalised people in society.

Andrew McCrudden has over 17 years’ experience across the AOD and homelessness sectors working in frontline and leadership roles. Andrew is currently the team leader for St Vincent De Paul’s Continuing Coordinated Care Program in Western Sydney and Nepean Blue Mountains. Andrew also has worked for Relationships Australia for the past 5 years as a group facilitator in men’s behavioural change programs.
